GOVERNMENT WILL NOT REST TILL PEACE RETURNS TO BENUE STATE: ALIA TELLS DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has stated that government will not relax on her efforts to bring peace back to Benue State.

The Governor stated this Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at Government House, Makurdi when he received a delegation from Doctors Without Borders (Medicines San Frontiers), an International independent humanitarian organisation which provides impartial medical humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict, epidemics, or disaster.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, on behalf of Benue people, welcomed the delegation to Benue State and appreciated them for chosen to be there for the people whom circumstantially have found themselves where they are today, or whom the world may have forgotten.

He acknowledged the presence of insecurity which he said was creating more humanitarian crisis in Benue State, and added that the government will not rest on her oars to bring peace back to the troubled areas.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, who said lack of transparency and unaccountability has stalled food delivery to IDPs, assured the team of strong collaboration and invited them to stay in Benue State and make the state a springboard to reach out to other states of the nation.

Earlier, the delegation which was made up of Operations Advisor, Karel Hendriks, Head of Mission, Bilal Ahmed, and Project Coordinator, Alshali Ismael said they have been in Benue State since February 2018, providing support to displaced persons who are victims of farmers - herders conflict.

They identified diseases such as malaria and typhoid, as well as lack of food, lack of water, lack of shelter, and sexual violence as some of the major challenges affecting the people living in IDPs Camps in Benue State.

While thanking the Governor for the warm reception accorded them, the team sued for coordination in delivering humanitarian assistance to the people and also called on the government to step up in providing welfare services to the displaced persons.
