BENUE GOVERNOR BEGINS PROCESS TO RETURN IDPs TO THEIR ANCESTRAL HOMES

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Dr Hyacinth Iormem Alia has begun the process to resettle and reintegrate Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state to their ancestral homes.

Speaking Wednesday, July 26, 2023 when he led the UN delegation to IDPs camp in Makurdi and Guma Local Government Areas, Governor Alia expressed worry that large number of people who have been displaced from their ancestral homes are now living under a very pitiable condition without food, water, and shelter.

He appreciated the support from United Nations and other organizations in maintaining global peace and security, stressing that security remains a pressing concern in Benue State, particularly in relation to herder-farner conflict.

The Governor said he looks to the United Nations for support in implementing comprehensive security initiatives and conflict resolution mechanisms to create an atmosphere of peace and security for all Benue people.

He expressed confidence that his administration will put an end to insecurity and also reintegrate the IDPs to their ancestral homes.

For the meantime, the Governor assured the people that food materials and other logistics assistance would be provided to them through State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Earlier, the Chairman of the people living at the unofficial camp at Afia in Makurdi Local Government Area,Tar Abraham complained of lack of shelter, water, food, and health facilities,, and appealed to the Government of Benue State to help return them back to their homes.
