Ukum is known as a one of the highest yam producing Local Government in Benue and one of the Local Government with the largest tax drive which at a point, attracted Federal Government to bring an International yam Market in Benue State and situated in Zaki Biam.
Today, the people of the Local Government are consistently under attacks by Armed Groups, Terrorists and Kidnapping therefore, exposing the area to one of the Market Zones on the brim of extinction due to the nature of evil activities that takes place in the locality.
Yesterday, been 11th July, 2023 two successful attacks where launched in Ukum with one at Akpuuna early hours of the morning where about 23 confired death cases where recorded and the second one in the afternoon towards evening at the popular Tine Nune area where houses where burnt down and many people displaced although, there was no report or record of death at the moment. Both attacks where well organised and cordinated by the attackers.
In a brief interaction with a source, The News Stream gathered that last week Tuesday while a wake keep was going on at Atsahatar, a settlement after yam Market, unknown gunmen attacked the wake and left another shocking message by shooting sporadically and ended up Killing some innocent persons while others got various degree of injuries.
And another incident occurred at Tse Iorlayia Mbason, Ingyenev Ugban where a night raid of house to house by Armed Group took place on Thursday 6th July, 2023 and at the end of the search, after collecting all they wanted, they ended up kidnappeing a business woman, the wife of one Tersuur Nongoamin who has been sick down for past three years which th kidnapers are demanding for the sum of 5 million for ransom before releasing her to her family.
With the shredded activities going on in the environment which are hinged on the break down of Law and Order, the Governor of Benue State Rev. Father Hyacinth Iormem Alia has condemned the brutal killing by unknown gunmen yesterday and call on the immediate arrest of those behind the heinous crime and further directs security agents to arrest those behind the unlawful act and bring them to book.
With the early intervention of Benue State Governor, it is the hope of a common man that the desired peace will return soon and the safety of the entire Ukum people will once again be quarantee for the sake of new Benue State under the watch of Governor Alia
