Benue State University Teaching Hospital Makurdi has achieved a significant milestone with the successful deliveries of three In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) babies. Dr. Stephen Hwande, the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, stated this on Thursday, 9th January, 2025 during a press briefing at the Muhammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital in Makurdi, BSUTH Annex.
The delivery was made by two mothers, one with two boys and the other with a baby boy and further stated that BSUTH is one of the first teaching hospitals in the North Central region to reach this achievement, and one of the top three in Nigeria.
Dr. Hwande thanked Governor Alia for his key role in making IVF procedures more affordable and accessible to the public. He also mentioned plans to introduce endoscopic surgery, also known as Minimal Access Surgery, at the hospital annex. He revealed that the hospital will soon offer free patient cards, consultations, and admissions for certified pensioners in the state.
The CMD highlighted ongoing projects at the hospital, including a water project, VIP Clinic construction, and the Governor Alia's Intervention Project on Drug Consumables and reagents centre and praised the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia for his dedication to improving the healthcare sector in Benue State through adequate budget allocation and staff welfare enhancements to increase productivity.
He expressed gratitude to the Governor for approving over Eight Hundred Million Naira to settle outstanding staff Hazard and promotional arrears, as well as the upward salary review of CONHESS/CONMESS, bringing it in-line with the same rate at other teaching hospital in Nigeria.
Dr. Hwande promised to employ any qualified medical doctors who submit their applications for consideration, with the ultimate goal being to further increase and enhance the overall quality and efficiency of service delivery within the hospital.
In his closing remarks, the Coordinator of Mohammadu Buhari Mother and Child Hospital, Dr. Luper Uva, thanked Governor Alia for appointing Dr. Hwande who has brought in his visionary leadership in putting the hospital on the map. He assured that he is dedicated to key into the vision and to providing excellent services to the people of Benue State and beyond.
